Introduction to Department of Geophysics and Information

Thanks to the visionary leadership of Academician Peng Suping, our university officially established the Department of Geophysics and Information in 2010 and embarked on the enrollment of undergraduate students majoring in Geophysics, which was later recognized as a national first-class undergraduate program in 2019. The Department of Geophysics relies on the first-level discipline of Geological Resources and Geological Engineering to cultivate masters and doctoral students.

The history of the Geophysics major can be traced back to the early days of the founding of the People's Republic of China, when the China Institute of Mining and Technology established the Coalfield Geological Prospecting major, which served as the predecessor of the Geophysics major. In 1959, the Coalfield Geophysical Prospecting major was officially established, cultivating a large number of professionals in the field of coalfield exploration in China. With the adjustment of disciplines by the Ministry of Education, this major became a specialization within the Geological Engineering major in 1998, adopting a categorical enrollment approach. Over the years, this major has produced more than 2,000 graduates, who occupy a pivotal position in the field of coalfield geophysical technology nationwide, accounting for up to 80%.

Relying on the key discipline of Earth Exploration and Information Technology in Beijing and the national key discipline of Mineral Resources Prospecting and Exploration, the Department of Geophysics combines the double first-class construction discipline resources of Safety Science and Engineering to create a research-oriented undergraduate education environment. Here, we are committed to cultivating geophysical talents with a firm political direction, excellent scientific qualities, and a broad international perspective, providing solid talent support for the coal energy exploration industry. In response to the development trend of new engineering disciplines, the Department of Geophysics has established three training directions: coalfield geophysical prospecting, urban engineering geophysics, and water resources, ecological environment, and geophysics, aiming to meet the society's demand for geophysical talents in different fields. Notably, the urban engineering geophysics direction was included in the Beijing High-Precision Discipline Construction Plan in 2018, marking the widespread recognition of the research and teaching level in this direction.

Relying on the scientific research strength of the Geophysics major, our university has also established multiple national and provincial laboratories and teaching centers, such as the Geological and Geophysical Engineering Research Center for the Coal Industry, the Bioremediation Engineering Research Center for the Coal Industry, and the Schlumberger Seismic Interpretation Teaching and Exchange Center. These platforms not only provide a favorable environment for scientific research and teaching for teachers and students, but also inject new vitality into the development of geophysics in China.
